Don’t be led by Putoo; Tilakou Cautions, in an Atongo Zimba Collaboration

“Putoo Boys dey work!”; that was my first thought when I heard of a collaboration between Avinash Entertainment signee & co-founder; a Don Max Tilakou and the ever-young Atongo Zimba of No Beer Fame collabo for that matter. This, I believe, is one strategic way to prove superiority and stay afloat as one of the most hardworking young musicians from the Upper East Region. Putoo is the result of that wonderful collaboration.

More often than not, issues of societal interest have been outlined through music, however, the ability to keep a good message and remain entertaining is a mark of ingenuity. Don Max Tilakou who prefers to go by the stage name Tilakou has proven to be such.

Even though he has frequently employed indigenous instruments in his works, the use of the 2-string lute (Kologo) on Putoo is arguably one of the best fusion he’s ever done. Who goes wrong when Atongo Zimba is in the studio?

Putoo connotes wickedness; in the song, Tilakou details the challenges the youth face in trying to succeed. Linking the pull-him down syndrome to the people who claim to love us, the leaders and their deceitful nature; he asserts a deliberate attempt to keep the youth amongst the down-trodden. He further suggests the effects of the neglect and deceit by African leaders, has formed the basis of several wars on the continent.

Tilakou then makes a call on Africans by with the following lyrics.

“Africans unite,
for a peaceful living, we need no fight.
We nor dey kill ourselves”

Putoo, though a beautiful piece of music transcends entertainment; it has a message many crave; and that’s where Tilakou stands out. His message is simple, don’t let the leaders deceive you into war because all they do is simply Putoo.

“The people we dey love them dey pray make we fall
You no get money everything go dey dull
Poverty be what make the youth dey war
Cus’ dem dey deceive us say mother Africa be poor.”

Putoo is definitely a masterpiece borne of a partnership between 2 different generations. Call it a a creative amalgamation of era’s and you won’t be wrong. Tilakou is Bolgatanga’s gift to the world.
