Abdullah Hamza Brings Hope – Fights Climate Change with Greening Commodities

A young social entrepreneur, Abdullah Hamza, is making giant strides in the Northern Region by employing a business model called ‘greening commodities’, to fight against climate change.

The Northern part of Ghana is one of the hardest hits when it comes to climate change and it is due to bush fires and illegal logging among others.

The model by the social entrepreneur has therefore come as a welcoming news for many.

Abdullah Hamza told journalists that, “Young people like me who read agriculture-related courses in schools do not necessarily need to seek employment but only need the skills and a little capital to be self-sustained”,

With his greening commodities business model, Hamza and his team are nursing economic and indigenous tree seedlings such as cashew, shea, and African locust bean, popularly known as “dawadawa” tree, which they supply free of charge to farmers to plant in their farms.

He said, following a set of criteria, selected farmers are trained and certified as green farmers and the team then provide support to these farmers on best agricultural practices and purchase their farm produce at a premium price. They are therefore supplied to companies, businesses, processors, and industries that are keen on shifting from sourcing raw materials from deforested to sustainable areas.

“Last year, we nursed about 150,000 tree seedlings including shea, cashew and dawadawa in three locations in the Savelugu, Mion and Nanton Districts of the Northern Region. We have employed about 34 workers including 13 women, who are placed on wages for managing the nurseries. We also engage several casual workers on regular basis to support us with the weighing and re-bagging of the commodities for sale”, he narrated.

Abdullah Hamza and his team were motivated to start the greening commodities initiative to ensure the sustainability of a 2-year project that ended in 2018. The project, which was funded under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grant Programme of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), supported three communities in the Northern Region of Ghana, to promote innovative agroecology models and mechanisms for conservation of carbon stocks.

Its activities encouraged climate-smart agriculture practices like planting of trees on farms and as farm boundaries, compost and organic pesticides preparation, as well as livelihood diversification initiatives such as beekeeping, poultry farming, small ruminant rearing, orchard cultivation (mango and pawpaw) and tree nursery enterprises for other streams of income.

“The UNDP GEF Small Grant Programme grant inspires our current social enterprise. After our NGO, Agrointroductions Ghana won the $25,000.00 grant award from the UNDP GEF small grant programme which ended in 2018, in a bid to continue the gains of the project, we developed a business model, piloted and tested its viability. The success of the pilot led to the incorporation of Greening Commodities Ltd in 2019 as a social enterprise to advance and sustain the objectives of our project under the UNDP GEF Small Grant Programme”, he said.

How the vision came about

Hamza’s self-enterprising drive long began after he completed his bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2013. After school, he had the opportunity to do his national service (a mandatory 1year national youth volunteering programme) at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. Just before finishing his service in 2014, Hamza had a strong desire to work for himself, so he decided to form the NGO, Agrointroductions Ghana, with three of his course mates from the University.

“Two years after founding the NGO, we couldn’t get any funding for projects, but we didn’t give up. What we decided to do was to resort to self-learning online on proposal writing and fundraising. We also read a lot about development projects and tendered in proposals till the UNDP-GEF Small Grant Programme awarded us a grant in 2016. After the project in 2018, we agreed to turn the lessons learnt into a green business model to continue to contribute to the fight against climate change”, Hamza indicated.

Progress made

So far, about 400 farmers are registered and certified under the greening commodities initiative. Within 1 year of operation, Hamza and his team have so far purchased nearly 2000 bags (100kg) commodities including maize, soyabeans and shea nuts from the certified farmers at a premium price of Ghc5 extra per each bag on the prevailing market price as an incentive.

This was confirmed by Zakaria Issah, who described himself as a proud green farmer in Dipali in Savelugu District.

He explained “Since we got enrolled on the programme, we don’t have to worry about how to sell our produce. The last harvest season, Hamza and his team came to buy 85 bags of maize from our group. We received extra 5 cedis per bag just because we planted their trees and followed conservation rules”.

According to Hamza, the model is not only guaranteeing access to market for farmers but also restoring lost vegetation through the promotion of regenerative agriculture (agroecology) and proceeds from the resale of the commodities are reinvested to sustain the cycle.

“Our only challenge is that our current clients are finding it difficult to pay extra premium on the green values of our commodities. Only one company was willing to pay something small but we are breaking even and reinvesting in the model”, he added.

Hamza and his team also noted that, they are ploughing back some of their profits, to promote other green initiatives like reforestation/afforestation, clean cookstoves, and elimination of wildfires to advance climate action.

Thanks to support from a climate change adaptation project, implemented by the Government of Ghana in partnership with UNDP, and funded by the Adaptation Fund, Hamza has also expanded his afforestation activities in the Savelugu District through a tree nursery and planting initiative.

Wizdoo drops Shakara; Do we have another Mr Eazi?

0

Shakara by Wizdoo (featuring Kharisma) is a beautiful Afro Beats song with some really interesting guitar strings. Aside the well thought lyrical content of Shakara, production is on point. This leaves a listener no choice than to get their feet tapping.

To say Shakara is a serenading piece of music is an under statement. From vocals, arrangement, to instrumentation, Shakara soothens and intrigues at the same time.

Wizdoo-Ft-Kharisma---Shakara
Wizdoo-Ft-Kharisma—Shakara

Who is Wizdoo?

Born Wisdom Chigozie Boniface from Ebonyi State in Nigeria, Wizdoo is the definition of resilience in the face of hurdles. The young man who lived in Enugu State, and later Ihiala Anambra State appears to been a sojourner. However, living in Ghana has got him kick starting something he’s very passionate about. Sometime in 2014, he realized his love for music wasn’t quenchable, thus starting a career alongside his regular hassle as a businessman.

Wizdoo who lives in Sunyani, has a big dream. That includes working with amazing artistes such as Sarkodie, Wizkid, Davido, and several others. Wizdoo has collaborations with super-talents like King Ayisoba and some other underground artistes.

The Challenges of Wizdoo

In an interview with www.atigsi.com, Wizdoo acknowledged the challenges of striving to become dominant. Especially from a place like Sunyani; however, he’s of the opinion that good music can come from anywhere. According to hi, it takes a move to Accra to gain the attention needed to boost a music career.

Whilst the above can be viewed from several perspectives, it is an exposition of the troubles talents suffer.

Shakara is Wizdoo’s gift to music lovers. It is also the precursor to an album to be released soon.

Shakara was released under Abuyaah Productions, Wizdoo appears ready for a jolly ride unto relevance.

Some few years ago when Mr. Eazi used to rock events at KNUST, few people least expected to see him become phenomena. Despite the immense talent he exhibited, he was still a stranger. His eventual success trashed the school of thought which advances a warped understanding of belongingness. The singer wowed Ghana, won Nigeria, and became a world class artiste. Will Afro-beats singer Wizdoo become another Mr. Eazi?

Many Nigerians have made Ghanaian a second home.

Wangyims Takes a dig at “Showbiz Gate-Keepers” in Ghana

0

Wangyims, also known as Phelipe Lyks Wangyims has often averred that the gatekeepers of the Ghana showbiz industry remain its biggest problem. Having dabbled in several online banters, his position has never changed. Phelipe as I like to call him has studied a lot about the systems that sanitise the entertainment industry in multiple countries. His belief is that, until sincerity becomes a foot-stool of those that call the shots, all endeavours will be a furtherance of the quagmire we find ourselves.

Wangyims is definitely entitled to his opinions, however, can we find the truth in his assertions?

Read below what Wangyims has to say about 5 personailities undoubtedly revered by the industry. It’s a Wangyims shot…Lol.

Wangyims introduction

The Ghana entertainment/showbiz industry is quiet interesting. Whether the interests of all stakeholders is truly considered by the many gatekeepers that adorn the industry is a façade or truth.

In dire times when people keep dying, businesses collapsing and economies crashing all in the name of a pandemic, one will be gasping at how the largest industry in the world that only saw a few surges is back running in the developed nations i.e., the creative industry. The creative industry has undoubtedly been the space that the most advanced nations have used to leverage their economic growth, break unemployment numbers, and have made many millionaires but in the case of my beloved Ghana the reality is different.

In Ghana where poverty numbers keep increasing, businesses collapsing in huge numbers even before the pandemic and unemployment has become an association, it still amazes me why policies are ignored and those that exert the powers to use this multi million-dollar industry would turn the other cheek. This article is to profile the face of mediocrity, the “who and why”, the do-little’s that stand in the way of growth and change of the Ghanaian creative industry. If you hate the truth pay no heed to this publication and save yourself the trouble ready further.

The industry gatekeepers according Wangyims

1.      MARK OKRAKU MANTEY

Mark Okraku Mantey

This name is not a stranger in the Ghanaian creative industry and in fact this individual is the Head of the “Ghana Creative Council”. This individual has been able to acquire a resounding respect for himself as a knowledge basket because of his once strict critique on a music talent show but the reality is, he has no knowledge of the industry he prides himself as a stalwart. It is sickening to see his very knowledgeable cronies wish on him to be made a deputy minister for the Ghana creative industry but its not surprising because he happens to be the boss of most of them, and or some are looking to have greedy favors from him when he annexes the office. This is a man who as a channel manager operates the most imported content on the platforms that he oversees, his channel can spend time and efforts to make voice overs on imported contents notable of them is the Indian soap “KUMKUMBAGIA” and on his radio platform cannot in data terms explain how they pay for the music contents that get used by the channels. How does this Mr do-little get to be a State Minister when even content management and appraisals for paying intellectual properties he has failed? And if you want to drive this argument into, he does not oversee the royalty collection agency of Ghana then my question to you is how involved has he been in rectifying the rot in the royalty agency as the chairman of the creative council? I’m sorry to say that he is not in any knowledgeable position to change the dilapidated nature of the Ghanaian creative industry and it’s always going to be a merry-go-round whiles he walks around in his all-important “skinny” trousers. And to his praise singers; I do understand your positions because in the land of the blind the one eye is the king.

2.      REX OWUSU MARFO (REX OMAR)

Rex Omar
Rex Omar

Another loud mouthed, greedy, corrupt and selfish personality affecting the growth and wealth of the Ghana creative industry. Note the key word “wealth” because he has seen lots of it due to his huge cashing out on a broken system that he and his board at Ghamro have deliberately kept it that way. This was a man that cried foul and carried machete to the office he is occupying now in a Museveni of Uganda style in getting rid of a said Idi Amin. And like his mentor Museveni; he has been able to financially enrich himself and his board members whiles keeping the rest of the musician members impoverished, swimming in poverty whiles gasping at their intellectual properties being used without any reasonable incentives. He has not only used his position as the chairman to misappropriate the funds of the Ghana music rights organization; he has also used his position to ward off any intervention that seek to see the office run as a proper royalty collection entity. Its 2021 and his office has no means to track channels using artist music and still receive moneys through a hunting and gathering era methodology. How cynic can he be to see most of his musical peers die of poverty when their works impact could have served them well in their present old but for this greedy Mr. Omar the broken system is his paradise; the broken system he refuses to fix is his gain. He has other cronies that have made this robbery of an attitude successful and that is the Attorney General’s office and the board at Ghamro. To highlight a few personalities in the game of deceit with Mr. Omar are Kwasi Ernest, Diana Hopeson, Bice Osei Kuffuor (OBOUR), Ahmed Banda (BANDEX), Bessa Simmons, Nana Kwaku Okyere Duah(Tic Tac) amongst others. These people have their mouths full as execs at the music rights office, so it shall always be shut on issues affecting musicians and their creative payments. And don’t be fooled about their impending elections coming up because they already know who is going to annex the office and continue the exploitation.

KV Bangerz Puts 30 Africa Musicians on one Album

3.      BICE OSEI KUFFUOR(OBOUR)

Bice Osei-Kuffour

The biggest deception that ever hit the Ghanaian creative industry; the biggest disappointment that ever happened to the creative industry is Mr. Obuor. Like his political mentor the president of Ghana, no one has ever enjoyed immense support to win a public office than Mr Obour whom many thought due to his youthful exuberance, was the one to lead Ghanaian musicians at a time when all hope was lost. He ended up being not so different from his predecessors as he was able to squander funds meant for musicians’ development and disguised it into research amidst using musician’s portfolio to secure visa’s for a fee but the only visible thing he achieved for himself was his bloated belly. He squandered not only the support but any coin that went through the Musigha office and whitewashed it in long rhetoric’s. His thirst for corruption does not see an end so he chose to implore himself to the higher offices where the big bosses of corruption are house i.e., the parliament of Ghana. Mr. Obour also shares in the loot in the Ghana music rights organizations offices as he is a board member as well. His sitting allowances on the board is more than a whole year’s royalty of a Ghanaian artist. If the creative industry would ever improve he needs to be kept extremely far away from any administrative duties even if he volunteers to work for free. A leopard never changes its colors.

4.      SOCRATES SAFO

socrates

Mr. Socrates is undoubtedly a good film maker but pathetically being controlled by his thirst to get his belly fed and so not decisive and honest in his dealings to issues surrounding the growth of the creative arts. As at writing this publication, I kept wondering to myself the significance of the office that he was put in charge and thinking to myself what his motivations are to be in an office that not only was denied any form of incentive nor finances to run but kept holding unto it for so long. It was not only funny when in one of his interviews on Okay FM he was crying of hunger and neglect but after some breadcrumbs were passed to him, he was up defending the no work done by his beloved joke of portfolio office. He has shown to the world that he is not objective to himself but similarly his IQ to process facts in front of him is at a beautiful zero. How do you entrust any form of leadership to an adult whose level of mind process is at par with a 14-year-old? Even though the film industry has not been so lucrative it has been at its all-time low if I want to avoid using the word “dead” to explain it. One would have thought that the likes of Peter Sedufia, Kobi Rana amongst others who are still working tirelessly to have government give them some relief to air their movies in at least 2 meter social distancing arenas fashioned like the week in and week out presidential briefings at the flagstaff house would have been supported by him but certain Mr. “Hot Fork” had a different agenda. To get paid and continue to speak for a government that has done next to nothing for the very profession that serves as his daily bread. He should at this moment be seeing his wealth level at par with the likes of Tyler Perry etc, but he is comfortable in being an “errand Old-man” for the government. He is only better in making X-rated movies but for a leader nor even a panel member for reasonable discourse in the creative industry he does not have the level of mindset to sit on that table.

5.      UNCLE FRED KYEI MENSAH

Fred Kyei Mensah – Wangyims

I call him uncle because I had so much respect for him until realizing that hunger could turn his demeanor around to support a government that has done nothing for the creative industry and his generation of musicians. His generation of creative artist failed the music industry in terms of putting systems and structures, and one would wonder that he would be up in supporting this generation correct the wrongs, but he is on radio using his old demeanor to continue to mislead and because of respect for his age no one can voice out to him to relegate his old mind to his Living-room. He has sold his integrity like the biblical Esau selling his birth right. Food is the common denominator for both Uncle Fred and the latter. The only difference is Esau sold his birth right for a one-time Pottage of Lentils but Uncle Fred is still on his knees picking up the cramps and as to when it will be enough to get off those knees would be a question for the gods. With the catalogue of works this legendary producer have, in a well-structured creative industry he would be in the position to contribute financially to political candidates, dictate to them on policies and not the other way round expecting to pathetically agree to their nuances to place some food on his table. It only amazes me that music producers like “HUMMER” of the last 2 fame, JQ and others have not conformed and speaks openly to issues affecting the industry and he should have been lending his support to them. These producers mentioned above know the value of their works and how much wealth they would have earned if their works are appraised to their colleagues in the most advanced countries that rewards hard work with huge financial benefits through proper industry structures. Uncle Fred has now become a self-sanctioned communicator for the government that cares little about his profession, singing their tune so that he gets favors from them. If you doubt what is written here, you can make your due diligence by going to read the Facebook comment sections of the cousin of the president “Gabby Otchere-Darko”. He is always there in the comment section licking his boots to attract some attention; how pathetic! You can share some screenshots of his comments with the public if you find them.

There are more of these individuals in the Ghanaian creative space that fall within the scope of these 5 “do-little’s” and if we truly want any realistic changes to profit all the creative industry that employs millions, have made people millionaires and to smile a million then we should first start by identifying those benefiting in the broken system, those who have access to the government but can’t speak truth to them and get rid of them from the spaces they occupy and then there would be some hope of change.

Until then the suffering in Ghana creative space is going to elapse the damage of a tsunami!

CarlBlingx Renders moot all excuses of Upper East Musicians

0

CarlBlingx shared artworks from Aftown indicating his position on the latter’s Top 10 most streamed songs. Several cords struck in my mind. What has he been doing right? How is he accumulating the streams? Does music indeed have a language? Has he convinced his core fans to stream via online?

His songs Douna Da W3, Who Am I (Ft.Honcho), Chairman and  Judge Me, placed Number 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively on the top 10 chart. These songs competed with EL’s Nobody Send You which placed number 5, and a few other songs that occupied the remaining positions.

CarlBlingx---Jogo-Bu
CarlBlingx—Jogo-Bu

It is worth noting that all his songs that made it on the chart are from his current EP Navrongo We Dey. The affable Carlblingx has carved a niche for himself as a rapper. Whilst many may view his posturing as a rapper from his immense education, others see pure art and attitude. The kind that solidifies a brand for a lifetime. He’s remained consistent since dropping his first single “Incredible” in 2013. Eventually following up with an album “Jogo Bu”, the basis for an annual self-hosted musical jamboree. JogoBu Konnect.

Recently grabbing the Record of the Year at the Happy Man Bitters sponsored Upper East Music Awards 2020, Carlblingx is a test case.

CarlBlingx on Aftown

Many bemoan a lack of support in his home region of the Upper East Region. Whilst its not a perceived phenomenon peculiar to only Navrongo, could the jinx be self-inflicted?

This feat, is definitely a prove that the business of music is beyond talk. CarlBlingx has grown with each release. In doing so, he has created a cult-following whom I believe are behind his rise. Whilst many complain about patronage, they’ve refused to think target-marketing. A fan once described Carlblingx as the M.anifest of music from Navrongo. This, elicits something unique. Whilst the skilled rapper is a master of puns, punchlines, he never dumbs-down on content. He upholds the ideals expressed in content, which has earned him so much respect.

Music is an entertainment tool that can also keep the values of society going. So, when next you choose as an artiste to drop song, think about your audience. If CarlBlingx can bring his audience from the streets to streaming platforms, you can do same. However, do you have the kind of audience who would follow you to the streaming platforms?

1Africa Mixtape Volume 1 By KV Bangerz is Here – Listen Up

Last week, I wrote about an ingenious project by KV Bangerz, 1Africa Mixtape. The Project dubbed Afro Feast Tape has the eclectic producer teaming up with 30 different musicians from across the African continent.

Check it Out below

Spanning several genres, the producer and rapper seeks to create cross-border hits for all on the tape. I call it a true test of creative abilities. KV Bangerz is known for his Hip-hop and Trap leaning, however, this project highlights the multiplicity of his abilities. Backed by Legacy Kinetics, KV Bangerz is doing what many producers may be dreaming of.

Who is on the 1Africa Mixtape?

Listening to all the songs on the 1Africa Mixtape, one can attest to potential of music made in Africa. Considering the economic implications of excelling in music, the gains in fans from multiple countries is a plus.

  • 1Africa Mixtape features the following artistes. Blizz

  • Bryan The Mensah
  • Pappy Houdini
  • Cass
  • Coby Rola
  • StyleGod Dante

The above represents a well-curated list of musicians. Musicians on different pedestals in their own regard. However, since the quest for success remains infinite, this creativity-dominated mixtape is another step.

Not so often do we have such a huge collection of artistes on an album. Over-competiveness may be the cause, however, this tape may just be the game-changer.

1Africa Mixtape is another musical win for Social Media

KV Bangerz has indicated that all the connections on this tape were made through social media. This further demonstrates that when social media is used appropriately, awesome remain the results.  The 1Africa Mixtape  aka Afro Feast Tape is the fisrt of many to be released by KV Bangerz & Legacy Kinetics Africa.

Bloody Museveni Featuring Bobi Wine to be Premiered

Ghana’s leading reggae radio presenter Blakk Rasta is set to mesmerise audience with another creative piece of music. Bloody Museveni is set to be released on the 1st of February 2020. The suggested title indicates a lot. Blakk Rasta is definitely going to take us into history, whilst chronicling the events that led to so much hatred for the 76year old dictator.

Why Bloody Museveni?

Bloody Museveni comes on the heels of Bobi Wine’s “loss” to Yoweri Museveni, the incumbent president of Uganda. His loss in the 14th January 2021 election, has been described by many, including international observers as very fraudulent. Several instances of injustices were recorded across the country. There are reports that some polling stations weren’t allowed to vote, however ballots were thumb-printed by Museveni’s goons(soldiers).

Incumbent president Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni won the elections by a staggering 58.64% votes of total votes cast. Many have discounted the results as a true reflection of what happened.

Right after voting, Museveni’s main challenger Bobi Wine and his Family were put under house arrest. Soldiers surrounded his home around Kampala, refusing entry or exit to anyone. This action has since been squashed by a Ugandan High Court.

Bobi Wine is a Ugandan musician whose rise to prominence stems from producing awe-inspiring music. However, with time the young musician, decided to join the fight against injustice perpetuated by the political class.

This song Bloody Museveni, lends credence to the already tattered image of the Ugandan Dictator. Museveni came to power after toppling the government of then Iddi Amin. It is however, interesting the turn of events. As a man who stood against a dictator, its somewhat illogical to seek to rule forever. Museveni has been president since 1986, and this would be his 6th term as president of Uganda.

As frail as he’s become, Museveni continues to immolate antics that suggest he’s fit. However, reality is that he’s probably become senile, out of touch with reality, and just another 76year old power-drunk old man.
