7 things you didn’t know about the English language

1

English is the global Lingua Franca – which means a common language people from different parts of the world use to communicate with each other. Irrespective of its popularity, there are some facts you might not have come across. Here are 7 things you didn’t know about the English language:

  1. English is the official language of the sky! All pilots have to identify themselves and speak in English on international flights.
  2. More English words begin with the letter ‘S’ than any other letter of the alphabet.
  3. The Global Language Monitor estimated that there were 1,041,257 words in the English language in January 2017.
  4. It’s believed that one new word is added to the English language every two hours, which means that the language grows about 4,000 words a year!
  5. Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (a type of lung disease) is the longest word in the English language.
  6. If you were to write out every number in full (one, two, three, four…), you wouldn’t use a single letter ‘b’ until you reached one billion.
  7. “Good” is the most common adjective in the English language and “time” is the most common noun.

The Kumase More – A Letter to Nii Kpakpo

0

Dear Nii Kpakpo,

so having seen the plenty videos that flooded social media on the new kumasi city mall and its grand opening, this savanna boy decided to go see it for myself. eish! you thought i would lose guard and be in kumasi and not even try to see it. forget it!

the opportunity presented itself when i had to go help my brother in arms and solidarity, the headmaster extra ho, the letter head, the heading Comedian Aglah organize his Pure Comedy show in the garden city. this was the fifth edition and we wanted to make it big. the videos on social media came at the right time too because now the garden city had a mall and its denizens didnt have to come to accra to be in a ‘coded location’ at \west hills more’ with their 207 in the car park.

the accra kumasi more has been born!

there were several videos and i realize that some were intentionally staged like the one with the woman selling who receives a call that somebody wants to buy some of the stuff she is carrying on her head and the person is inside the mall and she was shouting over the noise in the mall whilst she was secretly recorded.

the most hilarious videos were the ones in relation to the escalator and how people just stood by to look at other people use the escalator and the funny clip about an older woman using the one going down whilst she tried so hard to go up and finally commenting to somebody off camera that ‘adi3 nu enkor oh‘ to wit the thing is not moving .

anyemi truth be told these videos gave me some wild ideas as to how best we could have a good laugh about various people in this country, imagine if a voltarian got on the escalator with his cat and the cat jumped out of his hands and he was trying to retrieve it.

furtthermore, imagine too if a man in a smock got on the escalator and he fell down and almost got hurt but wouldn’t and started cursing in any one of the northern languages. if either of these went viral you can imagine the insinuations and the laughter that will cause.

with all these in mind and laughing my head off i had to go see what the euphoria was all about for myself. so armed with me social media applications on my small phone i took a troski and headed out to see the mall. first impression was a wonderful edifice like all the shopping malls in accra layout was the same with Kumasi City Mall.

West African Bikers Converge In Lome – Togo

Bikers from Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Ivory Coast, and Senegal joined other Bike Clubs in Togo for the annual West African Bikers Converge event. The host clubs from Togo: Togo BMW GS Team, Association Des Motards Du Togo (AMT), Lome ’N’ Gelles Bikers and Togo Moto Club put together a great program to ensure the success of the event.

The 3rd edition of the West African Bikers Converge came off between 28th April an 1st May 2017 in Lome the capital of Togo.

The three-day event put together by WE.ABC team in Togo (the host clubs) (West African Bikers Converge) brought together different bike clubs from the West African sub-region to foster a bond, which would facilitate stronger relationships to make journeying through the sub-region as biker easier and cordial.

The event was characterized by different activities to give riders an interesting time participating. The programs for the period included a Conference and debate – under the theme “Riding Protected”, visits to Bike Stands and Workshops in Lome, a City Tour Ride, a Bikers Show, a Bikers night at Privilege Night Club, Tourist Trip to Kpalime and a Dinner Night.

The above was carefully put together to serve as a socialization ground where biker’s make new friends, learn new tricks and techniques as well as learn new safety measures and other trends in the world of Biking.

When www.atigsi.com spoke with the president of the BikersGh Motor Cycle Club from Ghana, Mr. Mawuli K. Tofah who led a number of bikers to the event, he acknowledged the impact of the event and hinted, it might be staged in Ghana next year.

Valentino Rossi, one of the world’s most famous bikers once said, “riding a race bike is an art – a thing that you do because you feel something inside.”

The above has proven to be true beyond the racetrack and now includes leisure riding and stunting for fun. The passion bikers attach to this unique art form albeit the adrenalin surges remain a beauty to behold. Most bikers treat their bike like lovers, hence the constant longing to always be by the bike, and take long and adventurous trips.

John Q’s Significance Gets a Boost

0

For every performing artiste, to be recognized is a career booster; this is because, whilst art is of the heart, impact remains paramount in the determination of success.

John Q has made major moves this year as a musician and it doesn’t surprise us to find his name in the list of nominees at the maiden edition of Ghana Entertainment Awards – USA 2017. He is in stiff completion in the category of Best Gh/USA Act with six other amazing artistes worth the award, however our bet is on John Q for his steady pursuit of success. The other nominees are Duke D2, Nana Nyc, Moe Sbw, Lighter, Rison, and 2 Shy.

This nomination is coming on the heels of his Afro-pop Jam “Dirty Dance” featuring Bright aka Bling Spackles formerly of Buk-Bak which is receiving massive airplay and positive reviews – success beckons – the Reggae and Afro-Pop jam master is all set to increase the upward race towards domination as a Ghanaian musician based in New York.

Often times, artiste originally from Ghana but living elsewhere would not be given the much needed support from the Ghana media because it is almost assumed that staying abroad is synonymous with riches. But initiatives like the Ghana Entertainment Awards will go a long way to create a bonding between Ghana based media and artistes originally from Ghana but living in other nations of the world.
