Sherifa Gunu has a new single, and this time the Dagbon songbird is looking south. “South Africa”, released on 29 July 2026, is her first solo release of the year and runs three minutes and 25 seconds.

A Ghana–South Africa Link-Up on Record
The track is produced by Tubhani Muzik and released under her own Gunu Music Entertainment imprint. Audiomack files it under Afrosounds, while Apple Music lists it as Afrobeats. The cover art makes the theme hard to miss: Sherifa Gunu stands inside a map of Africa painted with the flags of Ghana and South Africa.
It is a direction she has been moving in for a while. Her 2024 album, The Rebirth of Gunu, included “Kunjani”, named after a Zulu greeting, and her 2024 single “Dagbon (Tamale)” is listed on Apple Music as amapiano. “South Africa” makes that cross-continental connection the headline.
Who Is Sherifa Gunu?
Sherifa Gunu was born in Savelugu in the Northern Region, into a royal family of the Kingdom of Dagbon. She started out as a dancer, becoming Northern Regional dance champion before turning to music. She calls her sound Africana, a blend of soul and traditional Ghanaian styles.
Before stepping out on her own, she sang backing vocals for some of Ghana’s biggest names, including Kojo Antwi, Daddy Lumba, Amakye Dede and Sarkodie. In 2013 she won Traditional Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, and songs such as “Salamatu” and “Dagbon (Tamale)” have kept her voice at the centre of Northern Ghana’s music. Atigsi has followed her for years, going back to her 2018 single “Kelewele”.
“South Africa” follows “Sabali”, which she released in October 2025, and her feature on Fada-B’s “Peace” in May this year.
